It's time to join orchestra!

This is an important time in your child’s life.  Organizations they join will steer them toward certain friends. Musicians are the highest achieving students at HTMS. Music students are the ones that other teachers wish they could teach all day! Orchestra is more than a class, it’s a family of good kids who are good at what they do.

Research shows time and time again that playing an instrument improves the brain.

How Does My Child Join Orchestra?

Students will rotate through all Connections classes during the first 5 days of school (August 3-7).  When they come to Orchestra, they receive an overview of the course get to try instruments!  At the end of the 5th day (Friday), students receive a Music Sign-Up Form to bring home.  On the form, they list their top 3 instrument choices. The form is due with a parent signature the next day (Monday, August 10).

We also hold a 6th Grade Music Open House after school to provide additional time to try instruments and to let YOU the parents watch your child and ask questions.  Please join us on Friday, August 7, 4:30-6:30 pm.

Is prior experience necessary?

We teach our 6th grade classes from scratch; no prior experience is needed.

What if my child already plays an instrument?

Great!  Please indicate that on your Music Sign-Up Form.

What should I do in the meantime?

Encourage your child to join!  Ask them, “what are you going to play?”  The vast majority of 6th graders enroll in a music class.  Don’t be left out!
